ADVENT BLOG Named by God - HIGH PRIEST

“Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest.”

(Hebrews 3:1)

I have lost count of how many job references I have written over the years when someone is applying for a new job in a new place or a new position where they are working.  I always want to get it just right because what I am doing is speaking on their behalf the truth about their life and character, their strengths and abilities.  I have seen what has been written for me and wonder if it is the same person!

It is a privilege to be involved in such a way and such a reassurance for our future whatever that might be.  What a privilege to know that Jesus speaks on our behalf, not for a new position or anything like that, but to know that whatever happens to us in life or whatever we do either good or not so good, that he speaks up for us and on behalf of us.  He is the one who, as high priest, who took our place on the cross that we might be set free.  He is the one who is our go-between making our desires known when in the midst of troubles and seeking the forgiveness we so long for when we fall short.  Here is the comfort.

And, here is the challenge in the example that he sets.  The word “therefore” is often used in Hebrews as the writing is connecting different thoughts about Christ.  It is here that we learn that the words Jesus uttered are not just a preacher who likes the sound of his own voice but, is the one who was willing to get himself involved in the messiness of the world, making himself one with us.    He was never “six feet above contradiction”.  He espoused himself to the reality of the world and of life, of life and death.  Standing in the midst he is the one who is our ultimate example of what it means to be fully human and, at the same time, strive for those kingdom values.  It is about finding the right words, “a word in season” (Proverbs 15:23), and an example that attracts rather than scares.

Peter Hoytema, a pastor, wrote, “He has come to be with us in power and with love. In heaven, ruling over all things today, Jesus sees us. Through his Spirit he is with us, and he is praying for us.”

What would you want Jesus to take to God on your behalf today?  What does it mean to know that he speaks in love about you and for you?  Does your life attract others to faith?

Lord, when I feel I am struggling alone,

help me to know that you are with me

and that you are praying for me.

Use me also to share this comfort with others.

In your name.

AMEN
